MTEC SmartZone Lakeshore Center tenant, ControlTec, to move into Powerhouse business incubator to accommodate growth

HOUGHTON, Michigan (August 26, 2013) – CONTROLTEC, a vehicle data acquisition and analysis software start-up headquartered in Allen Park, Mich., is expanding its satellite office at MTEC SmartZone to help it meet their growing market demand.

MTEC SmartZone’s high-tech office space and access to Michigan Technological University student talent is a great complement to CONTROLTEC’s resource needs. Student employees benefit by gaining hands-on experience performing real project work.

CONTROLTEC officials said, because of the success of their satellite office, they’re creating a more permanent presence in Houghton by hiring on-site, full-time employees. To accommodate their growing team, CONTROLTEC is relocating from MTEC SmartZone Lakeshore Center to larger office space in the Powerhouse business incubator in Houghton. The move is tentatively set for Oct. 1.

“When we opened our office in Houghton fall of 2012, we started with four part-time employees. However, we realized it’s difficult for us to manage them remotely. We decided the project work they were doing was of such high quality, it was wise to invest more up here,” said Bill Leisenring, CONTROLTEC vice president and co-founder. “Last fall, we were dipping our toes in the water and now we’re jumping in.”

CONTROLTEC’s satellite office currently employs two full-time and five part-time students, who work on software development for the transportation industry. By late October, they expect to have 10 to 12 employees.

CONTROLTEC makes it a priority to provide a fulfilling experience for both career and life. They integrate fun perks, such as an office foosball table and basketball hoop, to help their team build relationships and de-stress during the workday. The Powerhouse business incubator, located on the scenic Portage Canal waterway, overlooking the Portage Lake Lift Bridge, aligns seamlessly with their “work hard, play hard” culture.

When the move is complete, students will work on key projects that fit into CONTROLTEC’s growth strategy.

“We’re migrating into mobile applications for Android and we’re going to move that project to Houghton,” Leisenring said. “It’s a good fit because the students are excited about working on it, and, at the same time, we get an opportunity to identify who is passionate about what they do.”

MTEC SmartZone CEO Marilyn Clark said, “We are thrilled to see CONTROLTEC increase their presence in Houghton and at Michigan Tech. This is a great opportunity for students, CONTROLTEC and the community, and we look forward to what’s ahead.”
